Thoughts on the Assassination of Charlie Kirk

Part Five

(Kirk’s Legacy and the Gospel; Two Very Different Jimmys)

By Gary F. Zeolla

This multi-part article is continued from Thoughts on the Assassination of Charlie Kirk: Part Four (Kirk’s Money and Memorial; Trump’s Speech and the Gospel; Bible Verses).

Charlie’s Legacy and the Gospel

I mentioned in Part One that Charlie’s influence will grow because of his martyrdom. That was made clear by his memorial. 100,000 people were in attendance. A report by Turning Point USA (TPUSA) was that 100 million watched it just on its livestream. But it was also livestreamed elsewhere, such as on Breitbart’s website. If you did not watch it, I have linked to that video in the References for you to do so. I would highly recommend it, as it was a very uplifting service.

About 100 million more watched it on the various networks airing it on TV. That is a whole lot of people who might have heard the Gospel for the first time. Those who were uplifted by the service and who might have been saved by watching it are part of Charlie’s legacy.

Andrew Kolvet, executive producer for The Charlie Kirk Show, said the memorial honoring the slain conservative activist saw “100 million overall streams.”

Kolvet announced the numbers via X on Sunday shortly after the memorial closed.

“Our production and streaming partners tracked over 100 million overall streams for today’s tribute to Charlie. This is JUST what they know about. It’s likely much larger. Over 100 million people just heard the Gospel proclaimed again and again by speaker after speaker. Truly remarkable,” he said.

Some users noted that [sic, prob., there] were likely more viewers due to families watching it together. “It is much larger. Our family visited and we watched it together. Every stream is probably 5-10 people,” said one social media user (Breitbart. Charlie Kirk Producer).

War Secretary Pete Hegseth gave a speech describing Kirk as “a patriot, a conservative, a leader, a builder, an advocate, an author, a lover of freedom, a husband, a father, a Christian and a warrior.” Hegseth emphasized Kirk’s faith, telling the crowd, “Only Christ is king, our Lord and Savior. Our sins are washed away by the blood of Jesus. Fear God and fear no man. That was Charlie Kirk.” …

Hegseth noted that Kirk came to see the nation’s challenges in spiritual terms, telling the crowd, “But over time, he realized, like so many of us have, that this is not a political war, it’s not even a cultural war. It’s a spiritual war, faith and family first, there is a God, and as Charlie would say, it is not us. We’re sinners saved only by grace, in need of the gospel. You see, we always did need less government, but what Charlie understood and infused into his movement is we also needed a lot more God.” …

Hegseth continued, “Charlie started with Liberty, but ended up lighting our country on fire for Christ. He started Turning Point USA, but this moment is the turning point for the USA right now” (Breitbart. “He Died).

Human Events Senior Editor Jack Posobiec said Sunday that historians will look back a century from now and point to Charlie Kirk’s sacrifice as one of just ’two or three pivotal moments” that prompted the saving of Western civilization….

“We will come to find that in the final moment that Western civilization was saved through Charlie’s sacrifice in the only way possible, by returning the people to Almighty God” (Breitbart. Jack).

President Donald Trump delivered remarks at the memorial for slain conservative activist Charlie Kirk, where he pledged that his organization, Turning Point USA, will “become bigger and better and stronger than ever before.”

“Charlie is bigger today than he was. Think about it, just two weeks ago — he’s bigger today than he was two weeks ago. Now that may not help his friends and loved ones, of which there are so many, and may not help Erika and those beautiful children who have to suffer so horribly through this moment. But they know it’s true,” the president said.

“He’s bigger now than ever before, and he’s eternal. He’s eternal. And I just want to say, we love him and he’s looking down at us right now and he’s saying, “wow, that’s a great crowd,” he added. “And it’s a great crowd of patriots. But that’s why I will soon award Charlie the nation’s highest civilian honor: the Presidential Medal of Freedom” (Breitbart. Trump at).

“The lesson of Charlie’s life is that you should never underestimate what one person can do with a good heart, a righteous cause, a cheerful spirit, and the will to fight, fight, fight,” the president said.

Closing his remarks, Trump declared: “Charlie Kirk rests in glory in heaven for all eternity. We grieve for the friend and leader that we have lost, but we go forward, strengthened by his faith and inspired by his example to defend the country he lived for, for the freedoms he died for, and the values in which he so deeply believed” (Newsmax. Trump: Charlie).

Charlie’s Continuing Influence

In many ways, Charlie’s influence is continuing to be felt.

First, to update a figure I gave in Part One, “Turning Point USA reported they have received 32,000 requests to start new chapters on high school and college campuses.” The last I heard, that number was up to 65,000 as of September 22, 2025, according to a figure I saw on FNC on that day. That is getting close to the total number of high schools and colleges in the USA.

Second, it has been said that probably more people have viewed Charlie’s debate videos during the two and a half weeks since his assassination than viewed them in the past ten years. I am not sure if that is exactly correct, but it is true many have been viewing them who would not have if it were not for this tragedy.

Third, in a tribute to Charlie’s reconciling influence, after their very public dispute, Trump and Elon Musk seemed to have made peace during the memorial, “Elon Musk was shown chatting briefly with Mr. Trump in a box at the stadium” (NYT. 4 Takeaways).

Musk first came to Trump’s side after the July 13, 2024, assassination attempt, becoming one of Trump’s closest allies. Now, the assassination of Kirk might bring them back together….

The joint appearance at the Kirk memorial is the first time the two men have been publicly seen together since their break. Trump and Musk appeared to chat amicably, raising questions about whether the former allies are seeking a reconciliation — or at least a public truce (Newsmax. Trump, Musk).

Finally, Turning Point USA is continuing its college tour, even without Charlie. And the attendance and enthusiasm are unabated:

The assassination of Charlie Kirk hasn’t slowed his conservative youth movement — rather, it has energized it.

“What happened ignited something in me. Like, he let down the flag, I’ve got to pick it up and carry it,” 16-year-old Kieran Owen told AFP.

The Virginia high school student was among 2,500 people attending a Turning Point USA event at Virginia Tech University, four hours outside Washington, on Wednesday evening [9/24/25]. “We are Charlie,” the crowd chanted (AFP. Turning Point).

Two Very Different Jimmys

There are two Jimmys who claim to be comedians. I will let the reader listen to them and decide for yourself if you think either of them is actually funny. But here, I will focus on their more serious comments about Charlie Kirk.

Jimmy Failla:

Jimmy Failla is the host of the radio show and podcast “Fox Across America” and is a frequent guest on FNC. On his Monday, September 22, 2025 radio show, he mentioned that he has a standing reward of $1,000 for anyone who sends him a video clip of Charlie Kirk making racist or transphobic remarks. He has yet to get any takers. And he never will, as no such clip exists. But that will not stop the left from continuing to lie and say Charlie was a racist and transphobe.

The closest you can come to the former is Charlie saying he would not trust a black airplane pilot. At least, that is how the left will quote him. However, in context, Charlie was talking about the problems with DEI. His statement was that he would not trust a black airplane pilot who only got his job because of “melanin not merit.”

This comes from the Breakpoint podcast for September 25, 2025. The host (John Stonestreet) was reporting about another podcast host who studied 100 Kirk videos to see if there was any support for the claims of racism, hate, and the like.

He found 59 videos in which Charlie was personally attacked by the person he was debating with, but in none of them did Charlie ever respond in kind. And in none of the other videos did he ever use anything that could be called racist or hateful, other than this black airplane pilot comment, and then only if taken out of context.

Jimmy Kimmel:

Meanwhile, another Jimmy, Jimmy Kimmel, got his job back. After negotiations with Disney Corporation, he was allowed to return to his late-night show on Tuesday, September 23, 2025. For the first time ever, I recorded it and watched it the next day.

I wanted to see if he would double-down on his lie or apologize for it. I would bet it was his highest rated show ever, as many others were probably doing the same. As it turned out, he did not apologize. He basically said he had been misunderstood and never meant to indicate the shooter represented either side. Thus, he doubled-down on lying, as that was clearly his original intent. In fact, he had planned on doing so in his next episode, before the plug was pulled.

Mr. Kimmel had planned to address the growing firestorm during his opening monologue for the Wednesday [9/17/25] episode of “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” But after senior Disney executives — including its chief executive, Robert A. Iger, and its head of television, Dana Walden — reviewed Mr. Kimmel’s planned remarks, they worried his monologue would make the situation worse, and decided to bench him and his show instead…

The session ended without Mr. Kimmel’s agreeing to changes in the monologue he had planned to deliver on Wednesday, which had sought to clarify his earlier commentary but also punched back against figures on the right who he believed had misrepresented those comments….

Conservatives pounced, saying the comments mischaracterized the political beliefs of Tyler Robinson, the accused shooter. Prosecutors have said that Mr. Robinson objected to Mr. Kirk’s “hatred,” but the authorities have not said which of Mr. Kirk’s views Mr. Robinson had found hateful. Mr. Robinson’s mother said that her son had recently shifted toward the political left and become “more pro-gay and trans-rights oriented” (NYT. Jimmy Kimmel’s).

Don’t miss the words, “Conservatives pounced.” You will see those words often in left-wing media’s reports about uncouth things said and done by those on the left. Rather than focusing on the left’s ill-mannered words and actions, the media spins it into conservatives or Republicans supposed overblown response to them.

In any case, not all viewers could see Kimmel’s return, as two broadcasting companies chose not to air

The Sinclair Broadcast Group announced Monday that it will not air Jimmy Kimmel’s late-night return Tuesday night across its dozens of ABC affiliates until “formal discussions” are held with the network regarding “professionalism and accountability.”

Further, Sinclair is calling on Kimmel to apologize to the family of conservative leader Charlie Kirk (Newsmax. Sinclair).

The other is Nexstar, “Nexstar, a major owner of local ABC stations, said on Tuesday morning that it would pre-empt Mr. Kimmel’s show indefinitely” (NYT. Local). “Sinclair and Nexstar control just over 20 percent of ABC affiliates combined, according to BIA Advisory Services, a research firm” (NYT. Jimmy Kimmel’s).

      So what did Jimmy say?

[I]t was never my intention to make light of the murder of a young man. I don’t think there’s anything funny about it. I posted a message on Instagram on the day he was killed, sending love to his family and asking for compassion, and I meant it. And I still do. Nor was it my intention to blame any specific group for the actions of what — it was obviously a deeply disturbed individual.

That was really the opposite of the point I was trying to make, but, I understand that, to some, that felt ill-timed or unclear or maybe both, and for those who think I did point a finger, I get why you’re upset. If the situation was reversed, there’s a good chance I’d have felt the same way.

I have many friends and family members on the other side who I love and remain close to, even though we don’t agree on politics at all. I don’t think the murderer who shot Charlie Kirk represents anyone. This was a sick person who believed violence was a solution, and it isn’t, ever. And, also, selfishly, I am a person who gets a lot of threats, I get many ugly and scary threats against my life, my wife, my kids, my coworkers, because of what I choose to say. And I know those threats don’t come from the kind of people on the right who I know and love. So, that’s what I wanted to say on that subject (adapted from Breitbart. Kimmel: I).

He was teary eyed as he said this. But it is no apology. It is an attempt to deflect from the lies and hateful rhetoric of the left and to simply blame the assassination on the shooter being “sick.” Yes, he was, but he got that way by the influence of his trans sexual sin partner and by reading and hearing left-wing rhetoric on the Internet and elsewhere.

Jimmy also went on the attack against President Trump:

“the president of the United States made it very clear he wants to see me and the hundreds of people who work here fired from our jobs. Our leader celebrates Americans losing their livelihoods because he can’t take a joke” (NYT. Jimmy Kimmel).

This is rather ironic, given that Kimmel, along with most of the left-wing media, tried to get Trump “fired” via impeachment in his first term, did their best to keep him from being rehired for his second term, and now are doing all they can to thwart his agenda in his second term.

But Kimmel is correct when he said, “This show is not important, … What’s important is that we get to live in a country that allows us to have a show like this” (NYT. Jimmy Kimmel).

I fully agree with Kimmel here and would be opposed to any governmental actions to get his show canceled. Just leave it alone. After garnering 6 million viewers on his return night, once the furor dies down, his ratings will plummet again, and ABC will eventually cancel the show for that reason.

Conservative talk show host Mark Davis would concur with this assessment. In fact, on his show of September 22, 2025 he was asking Texas US House rep if they could amend the 1934 Communications Act to eliminate the clause that a broadcasting station must “operate in the public interest.”

It is that clause that FCC head Carr was referring to when he said he would look into ABC’s license. Some on the right might cheer for ABC to loss its license of this situation, but (as Mark pointed out) we must remember that someday the left will be in charge, and they could try to cancel shows like his.

Mark’s point is, and I concur, keep the government out of who says what even on broadcast networks and let the free market decide. But by his comments, Carr opened up the door for the left to claim Kimmel’s suspension was an abridgment of speech and to make Kimmel look like a “martyr” for free speech, when in fact his temporary suspension was a business decision.

However, Kimmel showed the liberal bubble he lives in when he said the entire country should be able to rally behind several principles, with one of them being “reproductive rights for women.” Sorry Jimmy, but women having the right to kill their preborn babies is not a rally point this or any other true conservative can rally behind. It is in fact a vile evil that we rightly fight against.

What makes Kimmel’s comment particularly irksome is earlier he said he was a “follower of Jesus.” I would like for Kimmel or anyone else for that matter to show me where Jesus ever expressed support for the killing of babies, or the Bible in general. You will not find it. But you will find much support in the Bible for the personhood of the preborn baby and for the need to protect the most vulnerable among us. I demonstrate such in my three-book series on Sex and the Bible.

Finally, Kimmel’s show was only suspended for three days by Sinclair and Nexstar. He was back on the air on their stations by Friday (9/26/25), when he re-aired his Tuesday, so their viewers also got to see him lie about his lie.
