Bible Study Aids Comments: 2000

Below are assorted e-mails I have received from readers asking questions about/ and or commenting on various Bible study aids. The e-mailers’ comments are in black and enclosed in "greater than" and "lesser than" signs. My comments are in red.

>I have read a lot of your web site and you seem to use a wide variety of Greek Lexicons and other resources. I also saw somewhere on your site where the Strong's numbering system and lexicon may not be the best for in depth studies of NT words. I was wanting to know if you had to pick just a few Greek Lexicons or resources to use for word studies which would you recommend? Also where would a person be able to buy these resources at?<

In hardcopy, the following two would be my picks:

Walter Baur. A Greek-English Lexicon of the New Testament. 2nd ed. Trans. and rev. by William Arndt, F. Wilbur Gingrich and Fredrick W. Danker. Chicago: University of London Press, 1979.

Johannes Louw and Eugene Nida, eds. Greek-English Lexicon. New York: United Bible Societies, 1988.

In software, my pick would be:

The above two hardcopy references would be inaccessible to own who doesn't know Greek, but I would suggest the BibleWorks software program. All the Greek words are "tagged" so putting the mouse pointer over a word brings up the corresponding lexical entry from Friberg's and Low and Nida, along with two other lexicons (Liddell-Scott and the USB dictionary).

First I would like to thank you for responding to my earlier e-mail about Bible study aids. You recommended the BibleWorks software program and it looks very good. I do have a question though, do you know of any where that you can purchase the BibleWorks program at a discount? As good as it looks I find the price to be more than I could spend at this time(unfortunately).

Also what version of BibleWorks do you use? There is a big difference in price between the 3.5 and the 4.0 version. Maybe the 3.5 version would work for me!

BibleWorks 4.0 has several features that 3.5 doesn't have, such as Liddel-Scott's Greek lexicon and The Theological Workbook of the OT, along with additional Bible versions and Greek texts. But the 3.5 might be enough for you.

I think the price for BibleWorks is set by the company, so even at Christian Book Distributors, v. 4.0 is $300. So I don't think you'll get it any cheaper than that.

>I noticed you did not list Logos Bible software in your list [on the Bibles Online page]. It is great for Bible comparison and does much more than BibleSoft or other software. You can set keylinks to check Greek words without even knowing Greek as well as scroll through several versions at one time. You can create a parallel version using whatever versions you like and then save them in a workspace for future reference. I realize best is probably what a person knows how to use but this software is great.

Thanks for the input. I don't list Logos since, as you surmised, I don't personally use it. But I have heard from others like you that it is a very worthwhile program.
