Readers' Bible Versions Experiences - 2000

By Gary F. Zeolla

I present My Bible Versions Experiences on this site. In the following e-mails which I received in 2000, readers are expressing their experiences in this matter. The e-mailers' comments are in black and enclosed in "greater than" and "lesser than" signs. My comments are in red.

>Hi Gary-

Just a quick line to thank you for saving me a ton of time and A LOT of worry!!! I came from a church that advocated KJV Onlyism.  Well I never agreed wholly with them, but I always felt something was fishy with the CT and could never read any modern version without an uneasiness in my spirit.

Anyhow I left that church and I returned to my Lutheran roots and am now in one of their seminaries. Its been a 180 degree turn around from the KJV only camp!!! The MT/TR is looked down upon as inferior and the CT is as elevated as the KJV was in my old church -yikes!

Well I've been doing some research on my own time (aside from seminary studies and preaching), but there is SO much information it can be mind boggling (especially if you're doing primary source research!) and difficult to even know where to begin. So, thank the good Lord I came upon your web site, and you've simplified my life!!! Thanks buddy!  I've read most of your web page concerning Bible translations and it was a wonderful condensation of much of the material I've been digging through.  You've done an awesome job!  I feel I can now read my NKJV and not be worried about a terribly corrupt translation or underlying manuscripts (the KJV only paranoia still lingers in me a little...)

So much for this being a short note - sorry!

Thanks again!
Blair

PS - I'm still not 100% clear on the difference between the TR and the MT.  Is the TR a standardized text based upon the mss we now posses or is the TR a text based on mss we no longer posses?

Thank you for the kind comments. And I am thankful my site was of help to you. As for the TR vs. the MT, the TR was developed from the handful of manuscripts available in the 1500-1600's. The Majority Text was developed from the now 5,000 plus manuscripts available. So there is more manuscript support to the MT than the TR. However, the texts the TR were based on, for the most part, reflected what the majority of the now available manuscripts have. So the differences between the two are not that great.
