Trinity Comments - 2001
Below are assorted, short e-mails I received in 2001 on the items listed at The Doctrine of the Trinity. The e-mailers comments are in black and enclosed in "greater than" and "lesser than" signs. My comments are in red.
>Subject: A NAME IS A NAME
>HI! I WAS READING SOME OF YOUR INFORMATION AND I WAS WONDERING THIS. IF THE TRUE NAME OF GOD IS JEHOVAH, THEN IF ANY BIBLE CHANGED IT TO LORD, OR GOD WOULDN'T IT BE INCORRECT AS A TRUE TRANSLATION? I DO NOT ATTEND A CHURCH, NOR DO I STUDY ANY BIBLE ON A REGULAR BASIS. BUT I HAVE STUDIED WITH NON-DENOMINATIONAL CHRISTIANS AS WELL AS THE JEHOVAH'S WITNESSES. I FOUND BOTH TO BE VERY INTERESTING AND INFORMATIONAL. BUT AT THE SAME TIME VERY DIFFERENT.
PLEASE RESPOND BECAUSE I AM LOOKING FOR THE LIGHT.

Jehovah would not be entirely accurate as the Hebrew is simply YHWH. Vowels are usually added to make it "Yahweh." Jehovah came about as a corruption of the word via German.
However, either would be a transliteration while "LORD" would be a translation. Whether it would be best to transliterate or translate the word is a matter of debate. But you should note, the NWT is not the only version to use "Jehovah." The LITV also does, and the LITV is far more accurate than the NWT is.
Before you get too involved with the JWs, I would suggest you check out my articles on them listed at: Jehovah's Witnesses.
You should also check out my evaluation of their NWT. It is no where as accurate as they will try to make it out to be.
Before making a decision on such matters it is important to get all the facts and both sides of the story. You're hearing the JWs side of things, so it would be good to look at what sites like mine have to say.
And lastly, please don't type in all caps. It is considered to be SHOUTING and is very difficult to read.
IF JESUS WERE GOD. WHY WOULD HE CALL OUT FROM THE CROSS. FATHER WHY HATH THOU FORSAKEN ME?
AND IF JESUS WERE LORD GOD JEHOVAH WHY WAS HE CALLED JESUS? IN THOSE TIMES A MALE CHILD WAS SAID TO BE OF HIS FATHER OR BY HIS NAME.
IF GOD WAS ON THE THRONE AND THE LAMB WAS NEAR THE THRONE WOULDN'T THAT SHOW THAT IT WAS TWO SEPARATE INTUITS?
AND YES A PRESENCE CAN BE CONSIDERED OF GOD AND YES A PRESENCE CAN BE AROUND YOU AND IN YOU. BUT IS IT YOU?

First off I asked you before to please stop SHOUTING. I will not read nor respond to any more emails in which you do so. That said, you are confusing the doctrine of the Trinity with "oneness" theology. But since you have been studying with the JWs I can understand why you are making this mistake as their literature very often confuses the two.
I would suggest you read the Trinity articles on my site and my Scripture Workbook where I make this distinction very clear.
Note: I wasn't until I responded "Jacky's" second e-mail that I realized she was using a fake e-mail address. I guess she only wanted to shout at me and not actually engage in an intelligent dialog. He request for a response must have been some kind of diversion.
>I expect we won't agree on everything, but overall I'm very glad there's a site like yours on the web. The support for the Trinity heartens me; the Arians and oneness folks seem very vocal these days, and they're all over the web. God bless you for fighting back with the sword of Scripture.

Thank you for the kind comments. If you're interested, my Scripture Workbook signature has three chapters on the Trinity in it.
>Dear Gary,
Greetings from a brother in Shropshire UK
Please could you kindly give me your opinion on why you believe the Trinity has become so prominent in Christian Theology today? I am putting together a project and am grateful for your help.

Whatever doctrine is being challenged at any particular time is the one that will seem most prominent. The various aspects of the doctrine of the Trinity were debated endlessly in the early centuries as there were many who were raising challenges to it. Then throughout the Middle Ages it was, for the most part, generally accepted, so it wasn't as much of an "issue." But with the rise of groups like the Jehovah's Witnesses, once again there are many challenging the doctrine, so Christian apologists are again being forced to deal with the doctrine at length.
