General Comments on the ALT:

2000

The following are e-mails I received in 2000 commenting on the Analytical-Literal Translation (ALT). The e-mailers' comments are in black and enclosed in "greater than" and "lesser than" signs. My comments are in red.

Your Bible translation looks really good—literal yet quite readable. In comparison, I find the LITV very awkward to read and hard to understand in places.<

Thank you for the encouragement. And I find the comparison to the LITV interesting. I am, of course, not "competing" with Green's translation, but it's nice to know at least one person finds my translation even more readable than it. I am striving my best to make the ALT as literal as possible, yet still readable—a difficult balance to maintain, to be sure.

> I am especially looking forward to your migration to the Greek Majority text, as the Logos 21 is apparently not complete at this time. I hope you are going to do this migration before you start on the O.T. Most people don't know about the Majority text yet, but it is definitely the way to go, in my opinion.<

Thank you again, this time for the confirmation. As I am nearing the end of "stage two" I have been debating somewhat if taking the time to convert to the MT in "stage three" would be worth the effort or not. But comments like yours, coming just as I having been debating this point, confirm that it is.

And yes, I do plan on finishing the NT before starting the OT.

Are the quotes correct in:

Matt 2:5 - Now they said to him, "In Bethlehem of Judea, for thus it has been written through the prophet, 2:6 "And you, Bethlehem, [in the] land of Judah, you are by no means least among the leaders of Judah, for out of you will come forth a Ruling [One], who will shepherd My people Israel." [Micah 5:2] ??

Should 2:6 have single quotes, with a double quote at the end? I'm sure you'll catch trivial stuff like this as you do your proofreading.<

You're correct here. It should be: 2:6 'And ... "Israel'." I've corrected it on my system and will update it on the Web eventually. And feel free to point out any mistakes you see, "trivial" or not. Such simple typos are the type of problem I'm just apt to miss.

Oh, good. I am so glad to hear that you plan on converting to the MT. We really need a good MT translation. I can't wait to see the finished product! I am a little disappointed with the WEB (MT) translation. It is starting to look a little too much like the NIV. Oh well ... no translation is perfect.<

The WEB is a very readable, but not very literal translation. Meanwhile, the ALT is much more literal, but not as readable. But that is why the combination of the WEB and the ALT make for two good versions to compare in the freeware Bible Search Utility (see the ALT: Main Page for link).

>Okay. The only other typo I found was:

Matt 4:6 and says to Him, "Since You are [the] Son of God, throw Yourself down, for it has been written, 'To His angels He will give orders concerning You, and they will lift You up on [their] hands, lest You strike Your foot against a stone." [Psalm 91:11,12]

It looks like there is a missing single quote at the end.<

Thanks. You're correct again. And if the only mistakes I'm making are on the quotation marks, I don't think that's too bad : )
